Amazon Launches AI-Powered “Alexa for Shopping,” Replacing Rufus with Smarter Features
Amazon has launched its new AI-based shopping assistant, “Alexa for Shopping,” which will now replace the company’s older chatbot, Rufus. As Amazon continues expanding AI across its retail ecosystem, this new assistant, powered by Alexa+, promises a smarter and more personalized shopping experience across mobile devices, desktop browsers, and Echo Show displays.
While Rufus was primarily focused on helping users discover and compare products, Alexa for Shopping is designed to act as a more advanced shopping companion. It can answer questions, suggest products, compare items, monitor prices, create shopping guides, and even automate purchases based on user preferences and habits.
The system uses shopping history, buying behavior, and personal preferences to deliver increasingly accurate recommendations over time. Users can access it through Amazon’s search bar or a dedicated AI chat interface. It can also assist with product advice, technology recommendations, and even retrieve information related to previous purchases.
Amazon has also introduced new automation tools that allow users to set custom shopping conditions. For example, Alexa can automatically purchase products when their prices drop below a chosen limit. Users can also schedule recurring orders for everyday essentials and household items.
One of its most notable features is “Buy for Me,” which allows the AI assistant to purchase products not only from Amazon but also from external online stores. This reflects Amazon’s growing ambitions in autonomous AI-driven shopping, although it also raises concerns regarding privacy, reliability, and the level of control users hand over to AI systems.
This launch is part of Amazon’s broader AI strategy. The company recently introduced AI-generated product responses and rapid delivery initiatives through Amazon Now. Currently, Alexa for Shopping is being rolled out to customers in the United States.
