Spider-Man: Brand New Day Makes History in India, Becomes Highest-Grossing Hollywood Film
Destin Daniel Cretton’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day has achieved a major milestone at the Indian box office. Within just 11 days of its July 30 release, the superhero film became the highest-grossing Hollywood movie ever in India. It has also become the first Hollywood film in the country to cross the Rs 400 crore mark in net box office collections. After its second weekend, the film’s total net earnings have crossed Rs 415 crore.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day Breaks Hollywood Box Office Records
In terms of gross box office collections, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has already crossed Rs 500 crore in India. With this achievement, the film has surpassed James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water, which previously held the record with Rs 477.50 crore in gross collections.
Russo Brothers’ Avengers: Endgame follows with around Rs 445 crore in India. The 2019 Marvel blockbuster currently ranks third among the highest-grossing Hollywood films in the country.
Another Russo Brothers film, Avengers: Infinity War, occupies the fourth spot with more than Rs 272 crore in collections. According to Sacnilk figures, only three Hollywood films have managed to cross the Rs 400 crore gross mark at the Indian box office so far.
The fifth position belongs to Jon Watts’ Spider-Man: No Way Home, which was released in 2021 and serves as the predecessor to Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Interestingly, four of the top five highest-grossing Hollywood films in India are Marvel movies, and all four feature Tom Holland as Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man.
Disney films also have a strong presence on the list. Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book (2016) ranks sixth with a gross collection of around Rs 240 crore in India.
James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash, the sequel to Avatar: The Way of Water, stands at seventh place with more than Rs 235 crore in gross collections. The Lion King (2019) follows at number eight with around Rs 190 crore.
Mufasa: The Lion King ranks ninth with approximately Rs 172 crore, while Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman-starrer Deadpool & Wolverine rounds out the top 10 with more than Rs 169 crore in gross collections.
The growing performance of Hollywood movies in India highlights the rapid expansion of the market over the past few years. Before the pandemic, only seven Hollywood films had crossed the Rs 100 crore mark in India. Since then, another 16 movies have joined the club. Colin Trevorrow’s Jurassic World became the first Hollywood film to cross Rs 100 crore in India in 2015, paving the way for the series of box office milestones that followed.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day India Box Office Collection
Spider-Man: Brand New Day established its strong presence at the Indian box office from its opening weekend. Despite not getting IMAX screens, as they were occupied by Christopher Nolan’s Tom Holland-starrer The Odyssey, the film managed to deliver a massive opening.
The movie collected more than Rs 60 crore on its opening day in India. Collections dipped slightly on the second day, with the film earning over Rs 49 crore. However, it witnessed a major jump over the weekend, collecting more than Rs 70 crore on Saturday and over Rs 77 crore on Sunday.
After its four-day extended opening weekend, the film had collected more than Rs 257 crore, making it the biggest opening ever for a Hollywood film in India.
As expected, collections declined on the first Monday, with Day 5 contributing slightly more than Rs 23 crore. The film then earned Rs 21.75 crore on Tuesday, Rs 17 crore on Wednesday and Rs 14.25 crore on Thursday. This took its first-week collection to Rs 334.75 crore.
The film added another Rs 15 crore on its second Friday before gaining momentum again over the second weekend. It earned Rs 31 crore on Saturday and more than Rs 34 crore on Sunday.
Following its second weekend, Spider-Man: Brand New Day had a total net collection of approximately Rs 415.45 crore in India.
The film is expected to see another decline in collections from its second Monday. Its third weekend could also face competition despite the Independence Day holiday, with two major Indian films scheduled to release on August 14. These include Rajkumar Santoshi’s Sunny Deol-starrer partition drama Batwara 1947 and Nitin Kakkar’s Emraan Hashmi-starrer romantic thriller Awarapan 2.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day Worldwide Box Office Collection
Apart from India, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is also performing strongly at the global box office. In North America, the film opened with a record $360 million, surpassing the previous record of $357.10 million held by Avengers: Endgame.
Its worldwide performance has remained strong as well. According to reports, Spider-Man: Brand New Day became the second-fastest film ever to cross the $1 billion mark globally. It achieved the milestone in just 12 days, while Avengers: Endgame reached the same figure in only five days.
With around $655 million coming from North America and $1.01 billion from international markets, the film’s worldwide box office total has reached approximately $1.67 billion. This puts it at 12th place among the highest-grossing movies of all time worldwide.
The fourth film in the Tom Holland and Zendaya-led Spider-Man franchise, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who previously directed Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
The film also stars Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk, Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Jon Bernthal as The Punisher and Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova/Black Widow.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day also sets the stage for the upcoming Marvel blockbuster Avengers: Doomsday. Directed by the Russo Brothers, the film is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on December 18.
