YouTube Brings Back Private Messaging With Age Verification and Invite-Only Chats

YouTube has officially announced the return of private messaging on its platform, allowing users to share videos and chat directly without leaving the app. The feature is currently being rolled out to users aged 18 and above in the United States, with plans to expand availability to select international markets in the near future.

The move marks the comeback of YouTube’s direct messaging feature, which was discontinued in 2019 as the company shifted its focus toward public engagement tools. However, a pilot program conducted in late 2025 revealed that many users still wanted a convenient way to share content and communicate without switching to other apps.

To enhance user safety, YouTube has introduced several protective measures within the new messaging system. Users must complete age verification before gaining access to the feature. Additionally, new conversations can only be started through invitation links shared via third-party messaging platforms.

A new “Messages” icon has been added to the top-right corner of the YouTube app. Users can create invitation links through this section and send them to friends or family members. Once the invitation is accepted, both parties can share videos and discuss content directly within YouTube.

The invite-only model highlights YouTube’s intention to encourage communication among people who already know each other rather than turning the feature into a social networking space for interactions with strangers.

“Our users love sharing videos with friends and family, and we want to make that experience easier within a single platform,” the company said in its announcement.

According to YouTube, users frequently share music videos, Shorts, tutorials, and other content through external messaging apps. The new feature is designed to simplify that process and provide a more seamless sharing experience.

The company also confirmed that all conversations and shared content will continue to be governed by YouTube’s existing community guidelines and moderation policies. Based on user feedback, YouTube plans to further improve and expand the feature in the coming months.
