Sony Confirms Physical PlayStation Game Discs Will Continue Beyond 2028—But There’s a Catch

Sony has shared fresh details about its long-term strategy for physical PlayStation game discs. The company has already announced that all new PlayStation games launching after January 2028 will be available only in digital format. However, Sony has now clarified that physical copies of games released on disc before January 2028 will continue to be produced even after 2028.

Older PlayStation Games Can Still Be Reprinted

According to a report by Game File, Sony has informed PlayStation developers and publishing partners that they will continue to be able to place reprint orders for previously released disc-based games. This means that if older PlayStation titles remain in demand, publishers can manufacture additional physical copies and keep them available in retail stores.

Sony had previously stated on the PlayStation Blog that games released on physical discs before the January 2028 deadline would not be affected by its digital-only transition. The latest clarification confirms that publishers can continue producing those eligible titles whenever required.

Physical Disc Ordering Process Will Change

While Sony will continue supporting physical reprints of older games, the company is reportedly planning to revise the ordering process for PlayStation game discs. However, it has not yet shared detailed information about how the new system will work.

Reports also suggest that Sony is repurposing its optical disc manufacturing facility in Salzburg, Austria. Instead of producing PlayStation game discs, the facility is expected to manufacture optical microlenses in the future.

Future PlayStation Games Could Be Sold Using Digital Download Codes

For PlayStation games launching after January 2028, Sony is reportedly exploring a new retail model. Instead of selling games on Blu-ray discs, publishers may offer digital download codes through physical retail stores.

Although Sony has not yet explained how these retail packages will look or how the system will operate, the approach would allow traditional game retailers to continue selling PlayStation titles without including physical discs.

Good News for Physical Game Collectors

Sony’s latest clarification comes as welcome news for gamers and collectors who still prefer owning physical PlayStation game copies. As long as demand exists, PlayStation games released before January 2028 can continue to receive new production runs and remain available for purchase.

However, Sony’s long-term strategy remains unchanged. All new PlayStation titles released after January 2028 will be digital-only, reinforcing the company’s ongoing transition toward a fully digital gaming ecosystem.
