Microsoft Office 2021 Support Ending Soon: What Changes for Users?

Microsoft has announced that it will officially stop supporting Office 2021 after October 13, 2026. Once the deadline passes, the company will no longer provide security updates, bug fixes, technical support, or other software improvements for the productivity suite.

Although Office 2021 will continue to function normally after support ends, using the software could become increasingly risky from a security standpoint. Microsoft has stated that any newly discovered vulnerabilities or security flaws found after the support deadline will not receive patches or fixes. As a result, systems running Office 2021 could become more vulnerable to cyberattacks and online threats. The company has also confirmed that there will be no Extended Security Updates (ESU) program available for the software.

After support is discontinued, users will stop receiving critical security updates designed to protect against threats such as viruses, malware, and spyware. In addition, Microsoft will end technical support services provided through phone, chat, and other channels. Online help documentation and support resources may also be gradually phased out over time.

The decision applies to all editions of Office 2021. Home users can continue using their existing installations even after support ends, but Microsoft recommends upgrading to a newer version to take advantage of enhanced security, improved performance, and the latest features.

For businesses, educational institutions, and enterprise customers, the upgrade process may vary depending on internal IT policies and software management strategies. Microsoft advises organizations to review their Office deployment plans and begin preparing for the transition well before the support deadline.

The move also reflects Microsoft’s ongoing strategy of prioritizing subscription-based services such as Microsoft 365. These services receive continuous feature updates, regular security patches, and cloud-powered enhancements. As a result, Microsoft is encouraging Office 2021 users to consider upgrading to a newer Office version or migrating to Microsoft 365.

With the end-of-support date drawing closer, users who still rely on Office 2021 should start planning their upgrade or migration strategy now to ensure their software remains secure, supported, and up to date beyond October 2026.
