New details have emerged regarding Apple’s highly anticipated AI-powered smart glasses. According to a recent report, the company’s ambitious wearable project could arrive later than previously expected.
Bloomberg technology journalist Mark Gurman reports that Apple is now aiming to launch its smart glasses by the end of 2027. Earlier expectations suggested that the company could unveil the device by late 2026 and begin sales in early 2027. However, technical and design-related challenges during development have reportedly pushed the timeline back.
The report states that the smart glasses are a key part of Apple’s long-term product strategy. Current CEO Tim Cook is said to be a strong supporter of the project and considers it one of the company’s top priorities. John Ternus, who is expected to take over as CEO in September 2026, is also closely involved and previously led the team responsible for developing the product.
Apple’s delay comes at a time when the global smart glasses market is expanding rapidly. According to Counterpoint Research, the smart glasses segment recorded 139% year-over-year growth during the second half of 2025. Much of this momentum has been driven by the popularity of Meta’s AI-powered smart glasses, while several other technology companies are strengthening their presence in the category.
During Google I/O 2026, Google unveiled Android XR-powered smart glasses developed in partnership with Samsung, Gentle Monster, and Warby Parker. The AI-enabled eyewear is expected to reach consumers later this year.
What Could Apple’s Smart Glasses Offer?
Reports suggest Apple may launch its smart glasses in multiple frame styles and color options. The company is reportedly testing at least four different designs, including:
- A large rectangular frame inspired by Ray-Ban Wayfarers
- A slim and modern rectangular design
- A larger oval or circular frame
- A compact oval or circular frame
The glasses could be offered in finishes such as black, ocean blue, and light brown.
In terms of features, the device is expected to incorporate Apple’s multimodal AI technology, enabling more advanced Siri interactions and visual intelligence capabilities. However, reports indicate that these smart glasses will not support augmented reality (AR). Instead, Apple is said to be developing a separate pair of advanced AR glasses with built-in displays, although their launch is likely still several years away.
